In case of Target, malicious software has been installed that captured credit card information at the point of the swipe and PIN-entry. How the software has been installed on the network is still under investigation. Attention business owners of restaurant and retail establishments with point of sale systems. New York Suffolk County has banned the use of receipt paper with Bisphenol-A (BPA).

According to the Safer Sales Slip Act, the name of the legislation banning the BPA, these harmful chemicals can potentially cause serious health problems and should not be used in cash registers and point of sale systems. BPA can be absorbed through hand to mouth contact when handling point of sale system paper receipts.
